Lovera (mentioned on object), 1885
Johan F.A. Cateau van Rosevelt by Lovera, 1885. Cateau van Rosevelt (1823-1891) was chief officer at the Surinamese immigration department. After the abolition of slavery in 1863, contract workers, or coolies, were recruited in India and Java. By 1900 the Hindus and Javanese had combined with the originally European and African population and the native Indians to form a pluriform but segregated society in Surinam. On his lap, Cateau - 'coolie papa' - has a map of Surinam, which was made under his direction.
