Jizo in hell

Jizo has descended into hell to save souls being tormented in the underworld. The king of the underworld and his wife have come down from their thrones and are kneeling before him. Even they pay homage at the sight of Jizo in their midst.

  • Description

    Handrolschildering in inkt en kleur op papier met een voorstelling van de bodhisattva Jizō die is afgedaald in de onderwereld. Overledenen, op verschillende manieren gekweld, kijken verheugd naar hun redder Jizō, terwijl een duivel en assistenten zich naar hem keren en zich onderwerpen. De Koning van de Onderwereld Enma-ō knielt samen met zijn assistent neer in aanbidding, aan de voet van de trap naar zijn bureau en troon in een paviljoen. Links van Jizō staat een paal met een god van twee gezichten, de een vriendelijk, de ander angstaanjagend, die zich toekeren naar de overledene, al naar gelang de aard van diens karakter.
