Iron bracelet

Ferdi, c. 1953 - c. 1955

The free-spirited Ferdi left Arnhem for Paris in 1950 to pursue the arts. She was taught by sculptor Ossip Zadkine and in 1952 learned welding and metalworking from her later husband, sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri. She used the welding technique for her signature sculptural jewellery of iron and glass. The material was the guiding force; the pieces took form as she welded them.
