Indonesië vrij (Indonesia Free)

Mohammad Hatta, 1928

The Indonesian student Mohammad Hatta was chairman of Perhimpoenan Indonesia, a nationalistic association of Indonesian students in the Netherlands. He was imprisoned in 1927 for his political activities in the Netherlands. In his defence, while in his cell he wrote Indonesië vrij (Indonesia Free) denouncing colonial abuses and championing a future in which the Indonesian people would be free of colonial oppression. The text was published shortly after he was released.
