Indentured Labourers in the Depot

Théodore van Lelyveld, 1895 - 1898

While most of the migrants are Hindu, there are the occasional Muslims and Christians as well. All castes (classes) are represented, however members of the low caste are in the majority. On the full ships, distinctions become less strict and lasting friendships develop between the men (Jehaji bais: friendship between brothers). Some find a bride on board, whom they marry upon reaching their destination.
