IJmuiden

Mark Power, 1999-09

The Rijksmuseum commissioned the Englishman Power to take the series ‘Buren / Neighbours’, in which he portrays the Netherlands as a ‘neighbour’ and a foreigner. He travelled along the coast where the Dutch and English fought their naval battles and wars in the 17th century. With this history in mind he photographed Vlissingen, Hoek van Holland, and Texel. At the beach of IJmuiden he encountered this holiday couple with their grandson sitting before a background beset with heavy industry.
