In een landelijk omgeving (IJsselstein) met enkele boerderijen zien we personen op beladen fietsen of met een fiets aan de hand.

De fietsers komen terug van een tocht langs de boeren om eten te bemachtigen voor de familie in de stad. Het schilderij is aantrekkelijk van kleur en lijkt op het eerste gezicht even een onbezorgd landschap. De sombere fietser en de datum '1945' rechtsonder maken de kijker echter al snel duidelijk dat het hier niet een gezellig fietstochtje betreft.
