Dutch family in Yokohama, Japan. Woodcut, Japan, 1861. Under pressure from the West, in 1854 the Japanese agreed to open the country to commercial contacts. The Dutch were now no longer the only Westerners able to trade with Japan. Dutch merchants were also able to establish businesses outside Deshima, where the trading post eventually closed in 1867. At Yokohama, near Edo (today's Tokyo), a Western enclave emerged. This woodcut is part of a series featuring Dutchmen. The Japanese inscription explains: 'Hollander walking on a day off in Yokohama'.
