Een arme man en vrouw, in lompen gehuld, handen in de zakken, lopend op straat. Op de achtergrond staat een groepje van drie mannen met elkaar te praten voor een huizenrij. Op de achterkant van het blad een schets van een staande man met bijl of hamer. Gebruikt als illustratie aan het begin van hoofdstuk XI in het boek: Een vergeten hoofdstuk: blanke slaven (1898).
