Hip cloth (Sarong)

anonymous, before 1900

This hip cloth is decorated by means of a method called ‘songket’. During the weaving process, gold or silver threads are added to the silk by hand, creating a raised, shiny surface. The cloth was wrapped around the hips, with the bright colours as a vertical panel at the front.
