St Jerome Praying

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1632

Jerome spent a part of his life in solitude in the desert. He is best known for having translated the Bible from Hebrew into Latin and thus was often represented in a study. However, from the late 16th century it became more common to portray him as a penitent hermit, a tradition Rembrandt followed here.
