Getting started with the collection:
St Jerome Kneeling in Prayer
Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1635
Rembrandt etched St Jerome no less than seven times, evidencing an enduring interest in the saint. In the predominantly Protestant 17th-century Netherlands, the choice of such a Catholic subject is quite remarkable. St Jerome, however, also served as a model to scholars and humanists. At the least, this was in part the reason for Rembrandt’s fascination with him.
