Heemskerck and Barents Planning their Second Expedition to the Far North

Christoffel Bisschop, 1862

The overwintering of Willem Barents and his crew on Nova Zembla in 1596-1597 appealed greatly to the popular imagination in the 19th century. This painting was therefore also part of the same historical gallery as the work by Bilders. Curiously, Bisschop did not depict the harsh winter ordeal on Nova Zembla, but rather the preparations for an earlier voyage.

    Het schilderij toont Jacob van Heemskerck en Willem Barendsz bij de voorbereidingen van hun tweede poging om een noordelijke doortocht naar China te vinden. Deze tocht zou uiteindelijk eindigen in de beroemde Overwintering op Nova Zembla. Naast de beide protagonisten zien we op dit schilderij onder meer een kaart van het noordpoolgebied, een scheepsmodel, een globe en de vacht van een ijsbeer die is meegenomen van een eerdere tocht.
