Head of a crozier
anoniem, c. 1220 - c. 1230
The Devil is often represented as a reptile. Here the archangel Michael fights the Devil who assumes the guise of a dragon. The head of the staff is shaped like a snake and lizard-like creatures crawl on the knob. They too represent evil. The bishop, to whom this staff once belonged, had to protect his flock, the faithful, from this evil.
