Harpsichord Decoration with Monkeys and Medallions

Anne Claude Philippe Caylus (mentioned on object), in or before 1731

Watteau is also known for his ornamental designs, which often feature delicate floral vines interspersed with animals and figures. This composition was created specifically to adorn the exterior surface of a harpsichord lid. In an oval at the right we see a man serenading a woman with a violin. An alternative design can be found in the free-floating oval at the upper left.
