Half Model of an 80-Gun Ship of the Line

Netherlands, c. 1750 - c. 1800

Provenance

…; transferred from the Ministerie van Marine (Department of the Navy), The Hague, to the museum, 1883

Object number: NG-MC-254

Entry

Wooden half bracket model of the port side of a ship, mounted on a small wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The extent of the forecastle, quarterdeck and poop is outlined by ribbands with square hances. The sheer rises to both ends. One wale is indicated. The bow features only a stempost and the beakhead bulkhead is specified by a vertical frame mould. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The model does not have a taffrail or quarter galleries. The hull is round.

The model has been identified by a process of elimination only; its identification, therefore, is uncertain. According to Obreen the model represents an 80-gun ship of the line from Zeeland.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 254.
