Explanatory note

  • Het is niet duidelijk welk schip door dit model wordt voorgesteld: de brik van 18 stukken Gier, lang 100 voet, gebouwd in Harlingen in 1794, de brik Gier gebouwd door P. Glavimans in Rotterdam in 1795 of de brik van 8 stukken Gier, lang 22.6 m, gebouwd in Rotterdam door P. Glavimans Jz. in 1816-1818 (voor de sloop verkocht in Hellevoetsluis in 1845).

Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a two-masted vessel, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Four gun ports are indicated by white frames, indicating one deck. The bow features an empty beakhead with two cheeks. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The model does not have a taffrail or galleries. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated, fitted to a raking sternpost. The sheer rises towards both ends. One wale and the rail cap are indicated, painted black. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of two masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

It is not clear which vessel this model represents: the brig Gier built by Pieter Glavimans (1755-1820) in Rotterdam in 1795, or the 8-gun brig Gier, 22.6 metres long, built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam from 1816 to 1818 (sold for breaking up in Hellevoetsluis in 1845).1A.J.
