Explanatory note

Entry
Wooden half bracket model of the starboard hull of a ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.
The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The stem and stern posts protrude considerably from the model. The sheer rises towards both ends. The stern has a round tuck. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The keel drops slightly towards the stern.
The model shows the hull of a sloop of war constructed according to the Swedish shipwright Fredrik Henrik af Chapman’s (1721-1808) method of designing with relaxation lines. In 1803, however, Chapman rejected his own proposed new method in favour of the older parabolic design, illustrated by model NG-MC-337.
Scale unknown.
