Half Model of a Paddle Steamer

Rijkswerf Rotterdam, c. 1834 - c. 1837

Mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een driemast raderstoomschip, boven het barkhout beplankt. Elliptisch hek zonder details, roer met ronde roerkoning (Amerikaans roer). De gesloten raderkast heeft een uitzonderlijke vorm, voor hoger eindigend dan achter, en is op eenderde lengte van de voorsteven geplaatst. Zeeg voor en achter iets rijzend, een barkhout. Rondspant. De grote mast staat verder naar achteren dan gewoonlijk, waarschijnlijk om ruimte te bieden voor de scheepsmachines in het ruim. Schaal 1:40 (volgens Obreen).

Entry

Wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted paddle steamer, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard, painted black.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds, above the wale the side is planked and features a closed paddle box. This closed paddle box is placed at approximatively one third of the length forward, and has a distinctive form, ending higher forward than aft. The rounded bow features an empty beakhead. The elliptical stern bears the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Below the stern a round-headed rudder is indicated. The sheer rises slightly towards both ends. One wale is indicated. The hull is round. The position of three masts and the bowsprit are shown in a truncated form.

The mainmast stands further back than on other ships, probably to make room for the engines below.

The model was sent from Rotterdam to the Department of the Navy in 1837, accompanied by the plans.2HNA 4.MST 582-588; Rotterdam, Maritiem Museum, inv. nos. The 5-gun paddle steamer Phoenix, 39 metres long, was built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam from 1834 to 1836. It made a voyage to the Dutch East Indies from 1838 to 1844, after which it was repaired, rebuilt and lengthened from 1845 to 1847. In 1848, the ship went to the Dutch East Indies again, where it remained until its discharge in 1863.3A.J.
