Rijkswerf Vlissingen, 1843

Gepolychromeerd mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een driemaster. De huid boven het barkhout is gesloten, negen geschutpoorten op één dek. Elliptisch hek van eigenaardige vorm in lijst met afgeronde vormen, met één geschutpoort, geen zijgalerij; roer met ronde roerkoning (Soetermeers versie) en afgerond roerblad. Zeeg bijna vlak, één barkhout en één reehout; het barkhout loopt niet om het achterschip heen, maar wordt onderbroken door de huidgangen die tot onder tegen het hek oplopen. Gepiekt rondspant. Schaal 1:40 (schaal op model).

Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard with a stand.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Above the wale the side is planked and painted black. A red line runs along the entire length of the deck and beakhead. Ten shadowed gun ports are painted on the side indicating one continuous deck. At the forecastle and stern two raised, white bulwarks with square hances are indicated. The sheer is almost flat. One wale and one sheer rail are indicated. The wale does not continue around the stern but is interrupted by the planking, which extends up to the base of the taffrail. The bow features an empty beakhead ending in a decorative scroll and a white knighthead. The stern is elliptic. Below the stern a round-headed Soetermeer-type rudder with a rounded blade is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The keel drops slightly towards the stern. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

Left and right of the hull, at the same height as the waterline, two small square holes, possibly for mounting a metal leg, can be seen.

This model represents an 1843 design by August Elize Tromp (1801-1871) for a 14-gun brig, 37 metres long, with a main battery of twelve carronades.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 373. A brig usually has only two masts, whereas this model has three. The model was sent from Flushing to the Department of the Navy on 31 May 1843.2See inscription. No historical evidence has been found to suggest that this design was ever used.
