Mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een driemaster. Opvallend is het grote aantal spantmallen. De huid boven het barkhout is gesloten. Zes geschutpoorten op één dek. Het schegbeeld is een vrouwelijk borstbeeld, snijwerk tussen de slooiknieën. Op de kraanbalk een rozet. Gewrongen spiegel en zijgalerij van één verdieping, versierd met snijwerk; recht roer met vierkante roerkoning. Het model is voorzien van alle rusten met jufferblokken. Zeeg naar voor en achter iets oplopend, één barkhout en één reehout. Gepiekt rondspant. Schaal 1:40 (schaal op model).

Explanatory note

  • De korvet van 10 stukken Urania, lang 28.5 m, werd in 1830-1832 te Amsterdam gebouwd door P. Schuijt Jr. als in structievaartuig. Als zodanig gebruikt tot 1851, daarna gebruikt als kostschip en later als exercitiebatterij, herdoopt Astrea in 1868 en afgevoerd in 1888.

Entry

Wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard painted black.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The side above the wale is planked. Six pierced gun ports are situated one deck. The sheer rises slightly towards both ends. One wale and a sheer rail are indicated. The model has three channels with deadeyes. The bow features a fully detailed beakhead consisting of a carved billethead of a female bust, a trail board between the cheeks decorated with a floral garland, two hawseholes, a cathead decorated with a rosette and a knighthead. The stern has a round tuck and the counter is almost flat. The taffrail and quarter gallery are decorated with carvings. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed. The position of two, slightly raked masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

A remarkable feature is the large number of frame moulds used.

The 10-gun sloop of war Urania, 28.5 metres long, was built by Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz (1797-1885) in Amsterdam from 1830 to 1832 as a training vessel.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 347. Urania was used as such until the year 1851 when the vessel was converted to a receiving ship and later to a drill-battery. Urania was renamed Astrea in 1868 and finally decommissioned in 1888.2A.J.
