Guanyin

He Chaozong, c. 1750 - c. 1800

Guanyin’s compassion led to the deity’s transformation from a male into a female form during the 10th and 11th centuries. In this portrayal, Guanyin takes the form of a woman, cradling a boy holding a lotus. This rendition, known as ‘Guanyin bestowing a child,’ originated in China.

Description
Beeld van porselein op voetstuk, bedekt met een doorschijnend glazuur. De zittende Guanyin heeft een kind op schoot dat een lotustak vasthoudt; op haar borst een lotusbloem; naast haar een in een doek gewikkeld boek met 'Báiyījìng', 'de sutra van het witte gewaad'; het voetstuk in de vorm van een opengewerkte rots. Gemerkt op de achterzijde met het kalebasvormige vervaardigersmerk van He Chaozong. Enigszins bruin en gecraqueleerd glazuur. Blanc de Chine.
