Frontispiece Design for Het groot Schilderboek

Philip Tidemann, 1702

The painter Gerard de Lairesse lost his eyesight around 1690. His sons then set about publishing his ideas on painting in the Groot Schilderboek, which finally appeared in 1707. Philip Tideman drew the title page for it following Lairesse’s instructions. The blindfolded painter writes about art, accompanied by Invention and Knowledge. Fame flies above them. Minerva holds a medallion with an image of Art.
