Frontispiece Design for De wonderlyke reizen van Fernando Mendez Pinto
Pieter Jansz., c. 1652
Fortune takes centre stage, and is depicted nude, as was customary at the time. She rests one foot on a globe as a sign that fortune is fickle and one can quickly fall from grace. The man at her side and the seascape in the background represent misfortune. All kinds of instruments of torture are being cast over him. The woman at the right with the horn of plenty personifies Prosperity.
