French satirical print of the coronation of William III

In France there was fierce opposition to the 1689 coronation of Stadtholder William III as king of England, Scotland and Ireland. Here, the event is presented as unnatural. This explains the prince’s small stature. The frogs scattered throughout the picture refer to a French epithet for the Dutch. Many French satirical prints took the form of almanac prints like this one, with an image and a printed calendar underneath.

    Franse spotprent op de kroning van Willem III, 1689. Grote allegorische voorstelling gedrukt van twee platen met koning Willem III gezeten op de troon gekroond door vliegende duivels en vergezeld van personificaties van Eerzucht, Onvroomheid, Tirannie, Ondankbaarheid etc. Twee staande figuren houden panelen omhoog met voorstellingen van wreedheden onder het bewind van Cromwell en de onthoofding van Monmouth. Onderaan meer duivels en personificaties van Gierigheid, Verraad, Woede, Corruptie etc. Een andere duivel schrijft La Politique des Trirans. Onderaan de almanak voor het jaar 1690.
