Four Women Bathing

In arranging his album, Zobel looked for witty combinations and visual jokes. For instance, the prints on this wall (from the section devoted to mythology and allegory) all have a foreground filled with water. The bodies of water assume various forms. Here it is a bath for women, with four elegant nude ladies being spied upon by a lecherous satyr hidden behind a curtain.

    Vier naakte vrouwen (nimfen?) rond een bad, zitten met hun voeten in het water. Ze worden omringd door kostbare objecten, waaronder vazen, schalen, een kam en een spiegel. In de achtergrond rechts tilt een sater een gordijn op, en vanuit de schaduw begluurt hij de vrouwen.

Explanatory note

  • Folio 30 uit het prentalbum van Johann Georg I. Zobel von Giebelstadt (Röttingen 1543-07-20 - Bamberg 1580-09-07), de latere bisschop van Bamberg. Het album is vermoedelijk samengesteld tussen 1568 en 1570 in Venetië. Het album werd in 1999 uit elkaar genomen door een antiquair. De in totaal 124 folio's met prenten uit het "Zobel Album" werden aangekocht door verschillende musea en privéverzamelingen. De grootste groep (68 folio's) bevindt zich in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum. Naar een prent van Jean Mignon (Londen, British Museum, inv. nr.: 1982,0327.6). Mignon baseerde de compositie op een verloren gegaan ontwerp van Luca Penni.
