    inscription: ‘Fox-Talbot invented the method of taking negatives from which any number of positives may be produced. The photographs reproduced above were taken on paper negatives, which were waxed afterwards so that the possitive might be printed through them. The upper illustration was from life. The other was a copy of a French engraving. (See chap. iii.)’
