The construction of the Gajo Road (North Sumatra). Photo album, 1911 - 1913. This road, six metres wide and 105 kilometres long, connected the northeast coast of Sumatra with the Gajo and Alas territories in Atjeh province. Constructed between 1903and 1914, the road served a military purpose: the subjugation of Atjeh. This album, together with a second volume, was compiled by Jhr A.D. Laman Trip (1881 -1960). He collected photos of the construction work while serving as first lieutenant in Atjeh between 1911 and 1913.

Description
Album met rode kaft met opschrift in goud op snee, grijs schutblad en 30 grijze bladen, goud op snee. Elk blad bestaande uit twee tegen elkaar geplakte bladen, waarvan de laatste 10 blanco zijn. Op buitenzijde omslag (achterzijde) het opschrift 'Photographieën'. Op de bladen zijn aan weerszijden telkens 2 foto's (boven elkaar) geplakt. Tussen de bladen zit vloeipapier. Totaal bevat het album 82 ingeplakte foto's met achterin 5 losse foto's. De eerste 25 foto's zijn in de marge genummerd met potlood. Deze nummering correspondeert met een handgeschreven lijst (zie documentatiemap NG); de overige foto's zijn ongenummerd. De foto's betreffen de aanleg van de Gajoweg in Atjeh op Noord-Sumatra tussen 1903-1914, traject van Bireun naar Takinguen. Foto's van de bivaks langs de route waar de troepen gelegerd waren, wegwerkzaamheden door lokale arbeiders, landschappen etc. Achterin acht foto's met kleinere maten.

Explanatory note

Na de expedities naar de Gajo- en Alaslanden o.l.v. Van Daalen (eerste tocht in 1901), werd hij in 1903 belast met voorbereiding van permanente vestiging van Nederlands gezag. Aanleg van een weg van de Noordkust naar het binnenland was hierbij van groot belang. Deze zgn. Gajoweg werd aangelegd tussen 1903 en 1914, van Bireuen aan de kust naar Takinguen aan het bergmeer Danau Lauttawar, totale lengte 104 km.
