Fischerkopf IX

In 1908, Max Pechstein was the first Die Brücke artist to leave for Berlin. The Expressionist painter often spent summers in the fishing village of Nida on the Baltic Sea in present-day Lithuania. He was inspired by the local landscape and inhabitants. Pechstein portrayed eleven local fishermen and depicted their weathered faces in coarse, powerful woodcuts, such as Fischerkopf IX.
