Fantasy landscape with St Charles Borromeo

Henry Ferguson, c. 1700 - c. 1720

Ferguson, who was born in Holland but spent much of his life in France, specialised in painting sculpture and ruins. This elaborate fantasy is based on the French classicising landscape tradition, and includes the figure of St Charles Borromeo indicating an oversized antique sarcophagus which bears a relief of Christ’s nativity. It is clearly allegorical, but the exact meaning is obscure.

    In een geïdealiseerd classicistisch landschap staat de Heilige Carlo Borromeo naast een enorme marmeren sarcofaag waarop in bas-reliëf een aanbidding van de herders is afgebeeld. De voorstelling werd gebaseerd op een schilderij dat vanaf c.1635 werd toegeschreven aan Rafael. Borromeo wijst naar het reliëf terwijl hij twee mannen, waaronder een diaken, aanspreekt. Een bedelende man zit naast zijn kruk voor de sarcofaag en houdt zijn handen op naar Borromeo. Links op de voorgrond rijdt de Heilige Familie met het Christuskind op ezels, begeleid door een jongeman. In het midden leidt een jongen een blind meisje een waterstroom over. Rechts op het tweede plan geeft een rijk uitgedoste man aalmoezen aan een groep bedelaars.
