Ewer with Incised Foliate Scrolls

anonymous, c. 1000 - c. 1099

Cizhou ware tends to be somewhat coarse and was made for daily use rather than for show. The grey stoneware body of this piece is covered with white slip and a transparent glaze. By first applying white slip the surface became lighter and smoother, creating a good base for the application of glaze.
