Ewer and Basin

Thomas Chancellier, 1765

This ewer and basin were part of the toilet service that King Charles III of Spain gifted his daughter-in-law, Marie Louise of Parma. Such services could consist of dozens of items. They originated in the early 17th century at the French court when the dressing and grooming of the king and queen became a public affair.

Description
Waterkan van verguld zilver. De kan rust op een oplopende voet, heeft een bolle onderkant met straalsgewijs geplaatste godrons en, boven een profiel met rozetten, een hoge concave hals waarop de godrons getordeerd verlopen. Het deksel is gevormd als de kop van een dolfijn. Om het hoog oplopende oor slingert een bekronende zee-putto zijn dubbele staart.
