Epitaph for the Ros Family with the Seat of Mercy

Arnt van Tricht, c. 1550

Gravestone of the Ros family, from the Grote Kerk in Wageningen, c. 1550. This monument was deliberately damaged. The heads of the figures were knocked away or defaced. Soldiers of John of Nassau and radical Protestants mutilated the memorial in 1578 in Wageningen's Catholic church. John of Nassau (William of Orange's elder brother) governed the province of Gelderland and ruthlessly imposed Protestant reform. He used intimidation without compunction, and destroyed the interiors of many Catholic churches.
