A Procession at the Foot of the Palatine Hill in Rome

Josephus Augustus Knip, c. 1809 - c. 1812

Knip assembled this exceptionally large, ambitious composition with the help of at least three studies he had drawn in situ. He certainly consulted his sketchbooks for the scores of human figures. Knip probably made this drawing either on commission or for sale on the art market. For reasons that are not clear, he never finished it.
