Ecce homo

Brunswijkse Monogrammist, c. 1525 - c. 1535

Ecce homo means ‘Behold the Man’: at the top of the stairs, the arrested Christ is shown to the people who demand his crucifixion. The painter set this important biblical story in an imaginary city of his own time. Daily life continues as usual: building work goes on, there is a market, and ships are being unloaded in the harbour.

    Ecce Homo. Christus wordt door Pilatus op de trappen van het paleis aan het volk getoond. Op de voorgrond een grote menigte mensen, links een markt tafereel met kramen, wagens en straatverkopers. In de verte masten van schepen en een stadspoort. Voor het paleis staan werklieden op de steigers rond een zuil.
