Dunkirk, France

Henk Wildschut, 2010-04

Henk Wildschut visited the ‘jungle’ near Calais for the first time in 2006. In his Shelter series, he photographed the huts and tents of the refugees, who were hoping for a successful crossing to Great Britain. Every night they would leave their shelter possibly for the last time: maybe they reached the other side, maybe they were arrested. The poignancy of these images lies in the juxtaposition of the impermanence of these makeshift structures and the sense of homeliness they provide.
