Driftwood

Paul Strand (signed by artist), c. 1928

Strand began shooting still lifes of tree roots at the end of the 1920s. He was an adherent of ‘straight photography’: honest photography of plain, unadorned subjects. He used a view camera and large negatives. As a result, his nature studies are pin-point sharp. Printing on platinum paper enhances the definition of delicate details, and the compact composition lends the photograph even greater power.
