Domestic altar with the Last Supper

anonymous, anonymous, anoniem, anoniem, c. 1550

The ornamental frame of this domestic altar – richly decorated with grotesques, garlands, satyrs and putti – is based on prints by the Antwerp sculptor Cornelis Floris. His style is a distinctive, south Netherlandish variant of Italian Renaissance models. Modern, opulent works of art like these were often exported to Germany, Scandinavia and the Baltic region.
