Dipping Needle Compass

William Pope, 1820 - 1826

Entry

Dipping needle or inclination compass in gimbals, in a wooden box.

The brass compass bowl is weighted with lead inside. The compass card has a hole in the middle with a brass bridge across. This bridge has the dab for the pivot. The hole in the card leaves room for the compass needle, which is attached to the bridge by means of an axle, to dip independently from the card. The compass card is balanced with thin sheets of lead beneath.

The original idea for a dipping needle compass as executed by William Pope was formulated by Buache as early as 1732.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 874. The principle did not work, however.
