Design for Stained-glass Window with Four Old Testament Prophets

Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (mentioned on object), c. 1934

In 1934, Richard Roland Holst was commissioned to design the window decoration of the north transept of the Utrecht Cathedral. As a final step in the working process, he drew 68 full-scale cartoons on cardboard to assist the glass painter: the black lines indicate where the lead strips go and the colours of the chalk echo those of the glass. The four prophets still tower above visitors to the church.
