Defence

Jaap Wagemaker, 1955

The signature on this painting points unequivocally to a horizontal orientation. The reclining figure appears to be fending off an ominous apparition at the upper right. However, if you turn your head a quarter of a turn to the left, you can see that the figure itself emits a sinister threat. Offense and defence became interchangeable concepts during the Cold War because of the nuclear arms race.
