‘Shapes of Clouds and Figures in the Water’
Matteo Ripa, 1712 - 1714
This print illustrates Ripa’s struggle to render the Chinese landscape in a copperplate engraving. He mimicked the shape of the mountains depicted in the woodcut: however, he did not entirely fill in their surface with lines, instead using sparse hatching to create shading and give them volume. The foliage of the trees, on the other hand, does adhere to the Chinese style in the woodcut.
