De theeonderneming Parakan-Salak

De thee-onderneming Parakan Salak lag op West-Java in de buurt van Soekaboemi en was ca. 1500 hectare groot. Thee was tot het einde van de 19de eeuw een niet erg winstgevende onderneming aangezien er grote concurrentie bestond van thee uit Brits-Indië en Ceylon die men in Europa van betere kwaliteit achtte. De bloeitijd, ca. 1880-1920, kwam pas toen men de Javaanse soort had gekruist met Assamthee uit Ceylon.<BR />Voor Parakan Salak bleek de deelname aan de Wereldtentoonstelling in 1883 in Amsterdam en in 1889 in Parijs een gouden greep. De administrateur had namelijk een complete kampong met 60 personen en een gamalangorkest overgebracht naar Parijs. De bezoekers konden zo in authentieke sfeer een kopje thee drinken.<BR />In 1890 werd een eigen agent voor de verkoop van Parakan Salakthee in Nederland en Europa benoemd, gevestigd in Amsterdam: F.A.L. de Gruyter.<BR />Een zoon van deze administrateur kocht de onderneming Gamboeng, waar het boek van Hella Haase 'De heren van de thee' is gesitueerd.
