The Stoning of Stephen

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1635

The image on Rembrandt’s copper plate is in reverse with respect to the prints, the unavoidable outcome of the printing process. Rembrandt did not seem to take this into account beforehand, although he did inscribe his name in reverse on the plate. This copper plate offers a pure picture of how he initially conceived the composition. Here Stephen appears even more prominently as the centre of the composition than in the etching.
