The Sleeping Herdsman

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1644

This has every appearance of being an innocent scene of a sleeping old man, but that is a sham. The herder and herdswoman are busy with other matters than tending the cows. The couple keeps a close watch on the old man, albeit his presence only adds to the thrill of the game.
