David Leeuw and Cornelia Hooft with their Children
Abraham van den Tempel (c. 1622–1672), oil on canvas, 1671
The affluent Mennonite Leeuw-Hooft family is portrayed here making music; even the youngest daughter, Suzanna, joins in holding her flute. They are performing a religious song, with both the notes and lyrics clearly legible. Singing and music held great importance in the practice of their faith. Together, they embody a harmonious family life. The interplay of the sitters’ hands underscores the bond uniting them.
