Darius Marching to the Battle of Issus

Apollonio di Giovanni was one of the most prominent cassone specialists in Florence. Cassoni (chests) were often produced in pairs, mostly on the occasion of marriages, with depictions of heroic deeds. Here, the Persian ruler Darius is shown going to battle against Alexander the Great.

    Voorpaneel van een cassone met een afbeelding van de stoet met Darius, koning van Perzië, voor de Slag bij Issus. In de stoet zijn moeder Sisygambis en zijn echtgenote Stateira. Vooraan worden een offertafel en een beeld van Apollo gedragen. Met geïntegreerde lijst.
