Bart van der Leck, 1918

Bart van der Leck, one of the first artists to become involved with De Stijl magazine, limited his palette to primary colours – red, yellow and blue – along with neutral white, black and grey. He always took a recognisable design as his starting point, reducing this to a Composition of pure, geometrical forms. He described what he tried to achieve as ‘monumental clarity’.

    Vierkante abstract-geometrische compositie van rechthoeken en vierkanten in de kleuren rood, geel, blauw en zwart tegen een wit fond. De vormen zijn geordend binnen een vierkant dat wordt afgebakend door rechthoeken in de vorm van lijnstukken. Daarbinnen zijn vijf rechthoeken en vierkanten diagonaal geplaatst. Het schilderij is omkaderd met de originele lijst van witgeschilderde houten latten.
