Bart van der Leck, c. 1919

In the short time that Bart van der Leck was involved with De Stijl (1917–18), he wrote about the relationship between painting and architecture. Painting could ‘break open’ a space through colour. This painting is probably the design for a composition with planes of colour on the wall of his studio. The white rectangles indicate a window and a door.

    Wit fond met in het midden boven de horizontale as een liggende rode ruit, geflankeerd door twee verticale afgeschuinde blauwe lijnen. Midden onder de rode ruit staat een verticale gele lijn. In het witte fond zijn twee rechthoeken aangeduid met donkere lijnen onder de verf. Duidelijk zichtbare pentimenti wijzen er op de kunstenaar met andere composities heeft geëxperimenteerd. Het schilderij is voorzien van een lijst van houten slaglatten.

Explanatory note

  • Het schilderij is niet gesigneerd en gedateerd. Mogelijk is Compositie 1919 hetzelfde schilderij of doek dat onder de titel Compositie R, 1917 in 1949 in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam werd tentoongesteld. Het is opgenomen als nr. S55 in de oeuvrecatalogus van R.W.D. Oxenaar.
