Commode

anonymous, c. 1720 - c. 1750

The commode, a low chest of drawers, became fashionable in Paris in the early 18th century. The French word commode means ‘convenient’, and this elegant, practical type of furniture was indeed created to make life easier. This early Dutch example exhibits a mixture of influences from France, England and the Netherlands. The legs are identical to those of Dutch chairs.

    Commode belijmd met wortelnotenhout en esdoornhout op een eikenhouten kern en met massief notenhouten S-vormige poten, rustend op voluutvormige klauwen. De voorzijde is geschulpt en heeft in het midden en op ieder der hoeken twee laden. De middelste laden hebben verguld koperen trekkers en sleutelplaten. De regel is aan de onderzijde geschulpt en heeft een gedraaide knop en in het midden marqueterie. Het blad is eveneens geschulpt en met marqueterie versierd.
